St Catherine (Naomh Caitlin) is the patron of the parish of Ventry, in County Kerry. The cult of St Catherine of Alexandria travelled from the Middle East when the Christians were displaced from there by the Muslim advance. Rouen, in northern France, is said to be the point from which the cult of St Catherine was dispersed to Ireland. It may have been brought to Ventry by the Norman family of Trant. Cahir Trant is near Ventry. Her symbol is the broken wheel. She was martyred on the wheel. St Catherine and her wheel are the subject of a banner to the right of the altar in Ventry church.
